Again, good news from Mangistau

New photos and videos of leopard obtained in the regional natural park “Kyzylsai”

In 2025 on the territory of Mangistau region of Kazakhstan the implementation of the international transboundary project on the study and protection of the Eurasian leopard with the support of National Geographic grant and participation of Conservation X Labs successfully continues. The Kyzylsai Regional Nature Park and Ustyurt State Nature Reserve are active participants of the project.

On March 18, 2025 the staff of the regional natural park “Kyzylsai” during the check of previously installed camera traps received new photos and video of the Eurasian leopard in the period from February 11 to March 2, 2025. It is interesting that earlier, from January to December 2024 the same young male leopard was already observed not only in the park “Kyzylsai”, but also on the territory of the Ustyurt Reserve: https://www.brcc.kz/2024/09/27/new-photos-leopard-in-mangistau-region/

The identification (comparison) of leopard photos is done using a special computer program that analyzes the individual pattern of spots on the leopard's skin.

In this case, the program confirmed that the 2024 and 2025 photos captured the same animal.

We would like to remind you that BRCC is holding a national contest for the best children's drawing on the theme “Leopard in Kazakhstan” and a personal name for the leopard, which has been living in Mangistau for the second year. The results of the contest will be announced no later than May 31, 2025.

We hope that the leopard, which will receive its personal name at the end of the contest, will be delighting all of us with photo and video greetings from camera traps for a long time to come.
